Obituary of Dot Wright

Dot Wright, age 90, formerly of Stamford died January 15, 2016 at home in North Bend Oregon with Kathy and Thomas at her side. She was born Dorothy Cant in Wallesey, England on July 28th 1925 to Samuel and Ellen (Nellie) Cant. She grew up in England and served in the Women's Land Army during World War II and was stationed in Wybunbury from 1943 to 1947. It was during that time she met Claude Wright, an American Combat Infantryman serving in Europe. After the war she moved to America and married Claude in Hobart in 1947. They operated a dairy farm in Bovina for 25 years. After retiring from farming, Dot and Claude enjoyed a hobby of old bottle collecting, antique dealing and refinishing old furniture. They sold the farmland in 1976 and moved to Jefferson where they resided for 18 years. Claude preceded Dot in death on Jan 24th 1998. In 2000 Dot moved to an apartment in the village of Stamford where she enjoyed the daily interactions of family and friends. She loved traveling near and far, visiting her children in Conn, Michigan and Oregon. Dot celebrated her 82 nd year on an Alaskan cruise and was seen more than once, years later on the back of a Harley. Dot especially relished her day and weekend trips with nieces, nephews and friends. Many in Stamford will recall her daily walks about town wearing a bright pink hat and giving people a "hard time". She lived a long and rich life and taught us much about living young as we grow old. She is survived by her daughter Kathy and husband Thomas of Oregon, three sons, Gerry and wife Peggy of Conn, Ron and wife Pam of Conn and Richard and wife Jean of Michigan. Nine grandchildren, Sean of Missouri, Scott, Jamie, Aaron, Meghan and Caitlin of Michigan, Pamela and Lisa of NY, Devin of Maine and Bryan of Oregon and 12 great grandchildren. Also survived by sister Margaret of England and Joan of New Zealand, and many nieces and nephews on both sides of the pond. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers Leslie and Sam, and sister Rene of England. Dot served as an Election Inspector in Bovina and Jefferson, was a member of the Stamford Tree board, the Jefferson Seniors and was a very active and proud lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 6292. She volunteered at every Red Cross blood drive in Stamford and received a 10 gallon donor pin. In 2008 Dot along with thousands of British women was awarded a commemorative badge for her service in the Women's Land Army. This was accompanied by a letter on gratitude from Prime Minister Gordon Brown. In 2012 Dot moved to Oregon and loved the coastal weather, flowers and beaches that reminded her of England. Calling hours on will be held from 2-4PM and 7-9PM on Friday, January 22, at MacArthur Funeral Home, 40 Cornell Ave., Hobart. A funeral service will be at 11AM on Saturday at the Stamford Baptist Church, 40 Lake St., Stamford, with the Rev Waylen Bray officiating. Graveside services will be held at 11AM on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Evergreen Cemetery, Jefferson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either the Jefferson Seniors or the Stamford Tree Board.
