Condolences
My condolences to you and your family, Kathy.
I remember as a child, being driven by my father to your family's farm just to buy some worms for fishing. Before I knew it, I was sitting in your mom's kitchen and she was offering me something to drink while one of your brothers was explaining the finer points of tractor tires with his toy tractor. I often think of your family and the old days in Bovina when I drive by your farm.
I wasn't aware of your mom's service during the war. It seems that people who live through such things have a greater appreciation for life and live it to the fullest.

My dad often talked very fondly about his sister Dot but it wasn't until 1979 that I finally met her when she visited the UK. I found her full of life, friendly and extremely interesting; it was like I had always known her. I was also intrigued to have an aunt who spoke with an American accent, it was sort of exotic - I was young.
It was much later in the mid 1990's that I met Dot again on another of her visits to the UK. By this time I had a young son who she knew was interested in military history. Dot gave him a large Royal Dolton character jug of General Montgomery. He loved it and still has it on proud display to this day. That was a measure of her kindness and thoughtfulness. We had lunch that afternoon at a Shropshire pub and although the visit was all too brief, it was both delightful and unforgettable.
Dad always kept in touch with his sister by letter and later by e-mail, although I think Dot more readily embraced the new technology. While I only met her on two occasions they were both memorable and I feel proud and privileged to have known the aunt who meant so much to her brother, my dad.

"Dot was always Mum's "older sister" that she idolised and looked up to. The biggest thing she was jealous of, was that Dot was part of the Land Army and she was too young, and had to be evacuated. Dot always addressed Mum as "Hey Kid", but the times they met in England were always like they had never been apart. They are so similar in looks, personality, with the same passion to have to be seen and be heard.
My memories from my visit in 1972, was of being very welcome. As a 19 year old, I couldn't quite see things through Dot's eye's, at the second hand sales she had a passion for attending. However, she did present to me an 1858 preserving jar with a zinc lid to take home. I did thank her very much, but couldn't see (at my age) the value she saw in it. However, I have treasured it over the years and still have it proudly on display as that is my memories and connection with Dot and my family."

Loved you bunches Aunt Dot!!!! God broke the mold when he made you!!! You were one special lady!!!!!
I remember so many times talking with Aunt Dot, having a glass of wine or sometimes a small black velvet. Sharon and I would visit with her at her home or at our home, always share a laugh or two. I remember one year she came with us to a camp we are in on South Lake, (near Forestport NY. other couples, Rick & Ronda Frazee, and Tom & Joyce Blindenhofer were with us. Aunt Dot loved it there, she very much enjoyed going down the lake on the pontoon boat, watching for the Loons, (the Loons she was watching for are large water fowl - not Rick and Tom, me). It is just one of my many fond memories of time spent with her. Sharon and I are both so glad that we were able to spend a bit of time with Kathy, Thomas, and Aunt Dot in Oregon this past summer in Oregon, and to celebrate with them her 90th birthday.

Dear Kathi, Thomas and Family of Dot,
It was my distinct privilege to know this lovely lady. She lit up a room like only a few can do, and she knew no strangers. I had the distinct pleasure of meeting her in one of her hospitalizations in Oregon. The moment I entered the room, as a stranger to her, she talked to me like I knew her for ever. I loved her wit and, of course, her English accent! In the short time I spent around her, Dot, I know was a lady who brought much to others and never had an enemy. I know what a woman of character and fullness of life she was, mainly by knowing her daughter and son in law - Kathi and Thomas. Like mother like daughter. All truly wonderful acquaintances to have in my life! I have no doubt Dot is looking down on you two with such love, pride and thanksgiving for the wonderful life and sacrificial care you gave her while here in Oregon. We should all be as lucky to have the love and care Dot received from her daughter and husband while she lived in Oregon. Glad they could give you a little bit of heaven while here.

Drinking tea at time, bon fires until late in the, the countless games of rummy, berry picking, holiday meals, summers, the gardens, building card houses, yard sales galore, the stories, pig roasts, picnics just because, blackberry pie - just for me, rainy days, the tele, long walks and those are the highlights, These are my memories, I will cherish them always, I hope to one day be half the grandmother you were to me. I will always remember to laugh when I think of you. I love you grandma! Love, Pam (Hilton)
