Obituary of Ella L. Barlow

Goodyear Lake - Ella L. Barlow age 91 passed away peacefully at her home on Rt. 28 Goodyear Lake on Saturday, February 2, 2013. She was born March 19, 1921 in her parent's home in Hobart, NY. Named Ella Eudora after her maternal grandmother she was the daughter of Frank D. and Anstis Alvira (Vida) Foote Lamport. Ella was a member of the last graduating class of Hobart High School and enjoyed a senior trip to the 1939 New York World's Fair. During her high school years Ella was an outstanding basketball player, having made the Delaware County Girl's Basketball All-Star Team two years in a row. She exhibited horses at the Delaware County Fair for many years. After graduation she attended Miss Linington's School of Equitation in Milton, Mass., studying horsemanship and how to instruct others in learning how to ride. She participated in numerous horse shows at the collegiate level. After graduating she returned to Hobart to train and exhibit American Saddlebred show horses for her cousin Edward L. Foote II. In 1945 Ella traveled by train to California where she married on March 5, 1945 Michael Barlow, also of Hobart, who was in the armed services. In 1951, after the war, they bought a farm where they raised several thousand chickens and had a dairy of registered Holsteins. The marriage ended in 1972. Ella worked tirelessly, and her love of farming always remained with her throughout her life. After having raised three children she proudly saw them graduate from college. She always took pleasure in her children's accomplishments and attended as many of their events as she could, including sports, concerts, and horse shows. One of her greatest pleasures was watching her son Mike play Major League Baseball. Ella instructed many young people in the sport of riding and enjoyed seeing her students win at various shows throughout New York and Massachusetts. She was especially proud of the accomplishments of one of her students who exhibited at the National Horse Show in Madison Square Garden and the Grand National Morgan Horse Show in Oklahoma City. Having grown up during the Great Depression, Ella had great admiration for President Franklin Roosevelt, a reverence for hard work, and a deep respect for others. She was a staunch Democrat, and worked many years on the election board for the Town of Milford. She always believed in honesty and fair play. Her love of the land continued throughout her life. She was proud of the farm, Lakeland, where she had lived for the past 62 years enjoying Morgan horses and helping her daughters with the Morgans. Ella was a long time member of the New York Morgan Horse Society. Ella is survived by her three children, Patricia of Oneonta; Michael (Kathleen) of Cazenovia; and Sally also of Oneonta; four grandchildren, Matthew (Ellen), Andrew, Christopher (Jenny), and Elizabeth; four great-grandchildren; two nephews Frank F. (Jackie) Lamport and James (Nore) Lamport of Hobart, and their children, and several cousins. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother Frank Foote Lamport and his wife Mary B. Lamport of Hobart. Ella's family wishes to sincerely thank her caregivers from Round the Clock Nurses and the staff of the Catskill Area Hospice.
