Obituary of Anthony Resta

Delhi Anthony "Tony" Resta of Delhi passed away Thursday, January 16, 2014 at O'Connor Hospital, his family at his side. He was 86. Tony was an extremely strong man, having battled heart disease, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease and G.I. problems. He fought through it all, never complaining. He was truly part of the "greatest generation". Tony was born October 26, 1927 to Cosmo and Anna Resta in Brooklyn, NY. There he met his childhood sweetheart and future wife Marilyn Duni. As a young man, Tony had to take on various jobs to help his parents support their large Italian family. Despite this, he graduated from Strawbenmuller Textile High School in NYC and then enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC, then deployed to Auchsburg, Germany. There he was a Corporal T/5 with the 5th Constabulary Regiment, sent to provide security to the displaced survivors after the liberation of the Dachau Concentration Camp. After returning home from the War, he moved his family from Brooklyn to Commack, L.I. He worked as a machinist, a repairman for Frigidaire, and then as a service technician for General Electric, until his retirement in 1984 due to health issues. Tony was an avid fisherman, and took his family boating and fishing whenever possible, and this passion was passed on to his family. Tony was above all a family man and loved watching his three grandchildren in all their activities and sporting events. He and Marilyn would brave the elements to watch their outdoor sports, even though his health was failing. He loved his grandchildren. Tony was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Marilyn Resta, and recently by his brother Frank Resta. He is survived by his daughters Rene (Dr. Dave) Evans of Delhi, Jeanie (Gordy) Nichols of Bloomville, three grandchildren, Jordan Nichols, Katie Darling and JJ Darling; a sister Rose Pacifico of Cairo, NY; a sister-in-law Pat Antonucci of Brooklyn and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Daren Evans of Delhi and Avery Meehan of Hamden, Marc and Chrissy Evans of Walton, Jim Darling of DeLancey and Jean Sokol of Huntington. He also leaves behind his dogs and cats (especially his cat "White Fang") who were his constant companions during his last few years. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, January 19, 2014 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 131 Main St., Delhi, NY. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 20, 2014 at 11:00am in St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Delhi, NY with Father Edward J. Golding celebrant. Burial will take place in the Spring in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, NY. Memorial contributions in Tony's name may be made to The Heart of the Catskills Humane Society, the Wounded Warrior Project, or the society of one's choice.
