Obituary of Thomas Gordon Spencer
T. Gordon Spencer,89, passed peacefully at Chestnut Park Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, Oneonta, on Saturday, January 17,2015. He was born on July 8, 1925 in Wharton, NJ, the son of Thomas L. and Mildred Spencer. He enlisted in the Army and served during World War II. Private First Class T. Gordon Spencer proudly served his country from 1944-1946. As an Infantry Rifleman assigned to the 65th Infantry Division, he engaged German forces in combat during Campaigns of Central Europe and Rhineland. During the occupation of Germany, he was assigned as a guard for the military tribunals held in Nuremberg, Germany. He was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal. After his return from Europe, Gordon worked as a Game Warden in N.J. In the mid 1950's he moved to Delhi and operated a tire and auto repair shop, built a housing development and trailer park and finally, he operated Delhi Rock Drilling, Inc., a drilling, demolition and excavation business with Joseph Rosa. Gordon was an avid outdoorsman, hunting and fishing from Canada and Mexico. He took his handcrafted fishing boat and friends on numerous fishing trips to Lake Ontario, Virginia, Florida and Mexico, to name a few locations. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas L. and Mildred Spencer and a favorite Aunt Myrtle Blanchard. Gordon's friends are very grateful to the devoted, caring staff at the Chestnut Park Rehabilitation & Nursing Center. Their comforting and warm kindness kept Gordon smiling and laughing. A special thanks to Laura, Taylor and Corey. Calling hours will be from 6-8pm on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 131 Main St. Delhi. A Graveside Service and Interment with military honors will be held at a later date at the Berkshire Valley Presbyterian Cemetery, Wharton, N.J.
