Obituary of William J. Cody
William J. Cody (Bill, Wild Bill, Cody), 73 of Davenport Center, NY passed away on April 10, 2015 at Robinson Terrace in Stamford, NY.
Bill was born in Oneonta, NY on June 6, 1941 to Joseph A. Jr. and Doris (Shaver) Cody. He lived his entire life, except for 1966-1971 in the same house. He commuted from Davenport Center to New York City where he was a proud member of the Fire Department of New York for 21 years. Most of his FDNY career was spent in Rescue 3.
In addition to being a decorated FDNY hero, Bill owned his own business, Cody Excavating, was a master carpenter and electrician, furnace installer, dance floor builder and cook. You name it and he could build it, install it or cook it!
Bill is survived by his wife of 49 1/2 years, Janet (Dyer) Cody, daughters, Jill Cody Lutz (Bob Doroski), Stephanie Cody and Jennifer Cody Calhoun (Taylor), grandchildren Clint, Cali, Jenna and Nick Lutz, two special little grandchildren, his sister Ginny Sanford (Les), a niece and nephews, Deb Trask (Howard), Dan Sanford (Jen), Michael Cody (Katie), Christopher Cody (Casey) and 6 great nieces and nephews with another on the way. In addition, he is survived by his sisters-in-law Gail Christensen, Judie Sanford and Karen Dyer, brother-in-law Bob Dyer (Robin) as well as a multitude of niece and nephew-in-laws that her adored. These include special helpers during his last months, Peter and Shannon Christensen and Marlene Reed.
Bill is predeceased by his parents, sister-in-law Margie (Hebbard) Cody, brother and best friend, Joseph A. Cody III, in-laws Mike (Nayham) and Reta (Boyes) Dyer, brothers-in-law Richard Sanford and Ray Christensen, sister-in-law Joyce (Dyer) Wright and his favorite kitty and constant companion Skeeter.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the East Meredith or Davenport Fire Departments, Robinson Terrace or Catskill Area Hospice.
Calling hours will take place on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, NY from 2-4 and 7-9pm. A Celebration of Life will be held at the East Meredith Firehouse on Wednesday, April 15 at 11:00am with Rev. Bert More officiate. Private Burial will be in Davenport Cemetery, Davenport, NY.
