Marc B. Fried
I was Ernie's landlord, immediate neighbor, and friend in Gardiner, NY from 1966-1989, and continued as a friend thereafter. I shared with him the years when his children were born and growing up, and I guess I was kind of an adopted uncle to them. Ernie taught me so much about the outdoors, and we did a number of camping trips together, including, most famously, a very successful winter mountaineering trip to the White Mts (NH) Presidential range, in early February 1972. Folks who knew Ernie only after his health took a turn for the worse may not realize that he had a great sense of humor, and we shared many laughs. He will always remain as an important figure in my life.
