Obituary of Herbert W. Klumpe, Jr.
Herbert William Klumpe, Jr., 88, of Meredith, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2018, after a brief illness.
Born November 3, 1929, in Jersey City, NJ, he was the son of the late Herbert W. Sr. and Catherine (nee Doltz) Klumpe, and a 1949 graduate of New Dorp High School in Staten Island. He graduated with an Associates Degree in Agriculture from SUNY Farmingdale in 1951. After a cross-country road trip with his best friend, Bernie Noe, he was drafted into the US Army for whom he served for two years, including one year in Germany.
Upon his honorable discharge from the Army in 1953, he moved to Meredith to operate a dairy farm on Catskill Turnpike Road.
He married Evelyn Bryden on August 24, 1963, in Delhi. Herb and Evelyn continued to operate the dairy farm until the mid-1980s. After retiring from farming, he was employed as a driver by Delaware Opportunities for 25 years, where he continued to work until age 82. At this point he referred to every day as “Saturday.”
Herb is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Evelyn, and his four children: Herbert III; Catherine (Mark) Feather; Caroline (Martin) Christiansen; and Elizabeth (Justin) Dietrich. In addition, he had eight grandchildren:Rebecca Hotaling; Lauren (TJ) Moade; Kiah and Mara Stalter; Ella, William, Sam, and Oliver Dietrich.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert and Theodore and infant sister, Bertha.
Herb was a proud veteran, an avid outdoorsman, a die-hard New York Yankees fan, and enjoyed rich conversation with everyone he met. He was a Past Master of the Delaware River Lodge #439, F&AM, where he was raised in 1959. He was also a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason.
Friends and relatives are invited to call on the family from 4-7 pm on Thursday, March 8, 2018, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, 134 Main Street, Delhi, where a masonic service will be follow at 7 pm. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, March 9, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 565 Andes Road, Delhi, with the Rev. John Priest officiating.
Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 2PM on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at the Meredith Square Cemetery, Turnpike Road, Meredith. (Behind Meredith Baptist Church).
