Obituary of John Donald Hillis

John Donald Hillis passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 6, 2017.

He was born December 19, 1948 in Davenport, the oldest son of Arthur and Daisy Hillis.  He grew up on his grandfather and father’s farm. 

John worked several jobs throughout his life; a mechanic for John Deere, carpenter, and working for the railroad, however his passion was farming.  He ran many farms, including the family farm which he grew up on and his own dairy of Jersey cows for about ten years in Davenport and East Meredith.  This is where he taught his sons the value of hard work and instilled in them a love for the outdoors. 

He enjoyed hunting, bowling, going to the local diner almost every morning to visit with friends, and never had to search very hard for an excuse to be on a tractor.  John was known for extending a helping hand whenever it was asked for, without asking for anything in return.  He would gladly give his last dollar to someone who needed it, knowing it would make him sleep better at night.

John leaves behind his brother: Steve Hillis of Corsicana, TX; sister: Deborah West of Oswego;  His children: Dustin and Anna Hillis of Davenport,  Aaron and Felicia Hillis of Newport, VT, Neal Hillis of Newport, VT, Michael Hillis of Michigan,  Jennifer Hillis of Albany  and Kerry Hillis of Mobile, AL;  as well as many great friends throughout the community.

A celebration of life will be held on July 23rd from 12:00-3:00pm at the East Meredith Fish and Game Club on County Route 10 in East Meredith.
