Obituary of Dorothy A. Bloodgood
~~Passed away on June 13, 2017 at the age of 93, born August 3, 1923 in Hoboken NJ and moved to Bogota NJ in 1926 where she lived most of her life.
Graduated Bogota, NJ HS class of 1941; Attended Columbia University then was hired by G.M. Basford Industrial Advertising Agency during WWII to pursue her passion for advertising. Dorothy was also active in the American Red Cross along with her Mother during WWII. After the war Dorothy took a position with Food Topics Magazine located in the McGraw Hill Publishing Co Building in NYC held various positions until she retired to marry the love of her life Carlton on Easter Sunday in 1952. In later years Dorothy and her husband Carlton became avid collectors and dealers of antique post cards and hosted a Post Card Show in Stamford, NY for 22 years. Dorothy loved to research and share family history. She was the family historian putting together several books on the history of each family along with pictures and historical information. This is something we will all treasure.
Through the Post Cards and her love of writing Dorothy published two books “A Post Card Portrait with memorabilia of the Queen of the Catskills Grand Hotel Era 1883-1942 Stamford, Delaware County NY,” and “Post Card Portrait of John Burroughs Literary Naturalist.”
The NJ towns of Hoboken and Bogota as well as Stamford, NY were all close to her heart especially the memories of her childhood. Many of her stories of her early years have been put to paper to relive and enjoy. During Dorothy’s senior year at Bogota HS she had the opportunity to interview Lowell Thomas the author of “With Lawrence in Arabia” in his NYC NBC office where he inscribed to her “Here’s wishing you a life of high adventure!” Dorothy wrote on January 5, 2000 – I have had a life of high adventure -especially in the International World of Post Cards, a true study of history and geography – plus more.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents Godfrey and Mathilda (Cross) Unruh and her son John Godfrey Cornell Bloodgood.
Survived by her Husband of 65 years Carlton F Bloodgood a native of Stamford, NY. A daughter Margaret A Bloodgood of NJ and a granddaughter Jacqueline.
Graveside services were held at Stamford Cemetery on Monday, June 19, 2017
