Obituary of Margaret Cowan
HOBART _ Margaret "Peggy" Cowan, 69, of Hobart, died, Wed. March 16, 2011, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown. She was born on March 20, 1941, in New York City, the daughter of George and Mary (Kircher) Lehner. She married James H. Cowan on Aug. 14, 1960 at the Hobart Presbyterian Church.
A long time Hobart resident, Peggy opened Peggy's Beauty Shop in the late 1950's after receiving her beautician's license. She eventually moved the business to the dairy farm she and her husband operated in Hobart. Taking over Pine Grove Farm in 1960, she and her James operated the farm until they sold it in 1981. It was at this time when they purchased The Coffee Pot in Hobart. There, Peggy enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors who came in for a bite to eat. In 2004, the diner was sold to the Barr family and she retired.
Peggy was a member of the Hobart United Methodist Church, and played the organ for many years at the Catholic Church in South Kortright and the Presbyterian Church in Hobart.
Peggy is survived by her husband, James H. Cowan of Bradenton FL.; a son, James Keith Cowan and significant other, Trisha Kelly of Cobleskill; a daughter, Darcy Ann and Dr. Joseph Grogan of Mooresville, NC.; grandchildren, Kevin Belcher, Trevor Cowan and Eli Grogan; and nieces and nephews, Douglas, Mary Lou, Karen, Lena Marie, Albert, Kevin, George, John, Bonnie, Beverly, Billy, Betty Ann and Bucky.
She was predeceased by 2 brothers, Albert and George; and 1 sister, Mary.
Calling hours will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, March 20, 2011 at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 21, 2001 at the Hobart United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lorraine Coscia-Ackermann officiating. Burial will take place in Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.
Donations in her memory are asked to be made to the Hobart United Methodist Church.
