Obituary of Thomas McMullen

DAVENPORT Thomas McMullen, 89, of Davenport, beloved husband, father and grandfather, departed this life in the arms of his family on Wednesday, May 16, 2012. He was born November 2, 1922 in Harpersfield, the son of Manley and Frances (Johnson) McMullen. A life-long area resident, Thomas grew up on Titus Hill in Harpersfield on a 4 generation family farm. While attending Worcester Central School he met his wife Helen Christine Sperry. They graduated and later married on February 12, 1944. Together, Thomas and Helen owned and operated a Dairy farm for 40 years in the Kortright/Davenport area. Thomas was involved in many aspects of the Davenport community. He served as Town Assessor for 20 years; was a member of the Board of Education at Charlotte Valley Central School for many years and served as President for most of his term; served on the BOCES School Board; and was involved in Farm Bureau and Grange. He was also an active member, Elder and Lay Preacher of the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church for more than 65 years. An avid gardener, Thomas taught and enjoyed chair caning, loved to fish and host BBQs at the lake, and in his retirement, spent 20 years traveling to and from Florida for the winter. He is survived by his wife Helen McMullen; a daughter, Carleen and George Rynick; a son, Tim and Maureen McMullen; a son, Thomas Daniel and Rita McMullen; and a daughter, Christine and Ken Ackerman; 9 grandchildren, Julie, Heather, Andrew, Michelle, Brendan, Christopher, Tommy, Emily and Jared; 7 great grandchildren; a sister, Frances and John Fishlock; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and many friends. He was predeceased by a grandson, Matthew; and 2 brothers. Calling hours will take place on Sunday, May 20, 2011 at the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church, Davenport, from 3 to 6 p.m. A funeral service will take place on Monday, May 21, 2012 at 11 a.m. also at the church with Rev. Carol Wilson officiating. Burial will take place in the Davenport Cemetery, Davenport. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church and Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care.
